At a young age Daniel J. Quirk was inspired to pursue an entrepreneurial future in the automotive industry. In 1973 he bought his first used car dealership and started a 40-year career as one of the leading automotive companies in new England. As Daniel Quirk’s legacy grows, it continues to stretch well beyond the ancillary businesses such as the Quincy Auto Auction, an international auto parts business, and the extensive real estate holdings which include 112 acres of the former Fore River Shipyard. For Dan Quirk the communities that have welcomed him into their homes are what matter the most. Quirk has made giving back to his local community a priority throughout his career and continues to sponsor events and support the causes that matter most.
Every December Daniel J. Quirk organizes a toy drive for the Toys For Tots foundation at many of his dealerships. Quirk employees, customers, and friends fill their showrooms with gifts to donate, and when the time comes, Marines pick up the presents. Daniel Quirk takes special pride in the efforts of his employees and those in the surrounding communities to support the Marines’ worthy cause. Always excited about the event, Quirk said, “For as long as I can remember, Toys for Tots has been doing an amazing job ensuring that less-fortunate children across the country have a memorable Christmas”. “We value the communities we do business in, and Toys for Tots provides a fantastic opportunity for our new and used auto dealers in Braintree, Quincy and Manchester to reach out during the holidays.”
The holidays are not the only time Daniel Quirk works to reach out to the community. To provide a safe place for children to play in Marshfield, MA, Dan Quirk donated $55,000 to the efforts of Chris Cunio and Doug Russell to remodel the Marshfield Skate Park. Chris Cunio says that “We had $0 in our bank account when we met with Mr. Quirk. We showed him our plan. He looked the plan (and us) over for about 30 seconds, then put the plan down and said, “It is for the kids…I’m in.” Now the skatepark is a safe space for all ages to come together and enjoy safe and healthy activities.
In an effort to reach out and help older children as well as younger children and families, six years ago Quirk created a “Tech Team” of student interns from Cristo Rey High School in Dorchester. When asked why teens were the preferred choice for this program, Quirk said, “They’re quick to learn about new car technologies, and we have them showing customers how everything works. It’s a great experience for the kids, learning about business, technology, and dealing with people. It’s good for the customers, too.’’
The students go through Ford’s Sales-support Certification Program and are trained in customer service as a normal employee. The program enables these local middle and high school students to learn about the automotive business, technology, and how to interact with people. Quirk also believes that the program offers a great opportunity for employment.
This summer Quirk Auto Dealers celebrates our 40 year anniversary. Forty years ago Dan Quirk opened his first dealership, and started a long and prosperous relationship with the communities we call home. We are extremely grateful to all of the individuals that have helped make Quirk into what it is today. Without all of the support from our wonderful staff, customers, and neighbors alike the dream that is Quirk Auto Dealers would be just that, a dream. So all summer long celebrate 40 years with all of us here at Quirk automotive. Check in on our facebook and google+ pages to stay up to date on all of the 40th anniversary activities happening at our dealerships, and as always remember that Quirk Works For You!
