Did you know that there was a reported 32,675 motor vehicle fatalities in 2014 and that about 3,179 or 9.7%! This tells us that nearly 10% of motor vehicle fatalities could have been prevented if people would have paid more attention to the road rather than their phone.
Another statistic shows that drunk drivers are 7 times more likely to cause an accident compared to distracted drivers who are 23 times more likely to cause an accident! I am not by any means condoning drunk driving but I am trying to show how severe distracted driving is and how just like drunk driving should NOT be done.
Also, there are three main types of distractions. They are visual, manual, and cognitive. Texting impairs all 3 of these areas which is why you should NEVER text and drive!
14 States have made it illegal to use your phone while driving while 38 state ban ALL cell phone use for novice drivers (which are the category of drivers who most reportedly use their phones while driving). As you can clearly tell from reading this post, distracted driving is a HUGE issue that is not getting the amount of attention that it needs! My hopes of writing this article is that it will make you realize how dangerous looking at your phone, doing your makeup, or even eating while driving can be; and that you will stop and hopefully get your friends to do so also!
